​​October 2023 training update​

The State Fire Marshal (SFM) division has scheduled Fire Investigation Part I and II classes that will take place in 2024. The classes will take place at the Newport Fire Station located at 155 20th Street, Newport, Minn. Here is the schedule for each class:

  • Fire Investigation Part I classes
    • Feb. 26-March 1, 2024
    • March 25-29, 2024 

  • Fire Investigation Part II classes
    • May 13-17, 2024
    • June 10-14, 2024 

To be eligible for Part I, prospective students must be actively working for a fire department, law enforcement agency, crime scene processing organization or county attorney's office. Firefighters must have at least five years of fire service experience, have obtained NFPA 1001 FFII Certification, and have approval from their fire chief. Law enforcement staff must have at least five years law enforcement experience or be actively holding an investigations position, be MN POST licensed, and have approval from their agency head. All attendees must complete the following online classes at cfitrainer.net prior to the start of the Fire Investigation Part I course:

  • Fire Investigator Scene Safety (3 credit hours)
  • NFPA 1033 and Your Career (2 credit hours)
  • Understanding Fire Through the Candle Experiments (4 credit hours)
  • How First Responders Impact the Fire Investigation (2 credit hours)

These classes are limited to 24 students. You must have taken and successfully passed Part I within the last 5 years to be able to take Part II.
