Convicted offender DNA collection
CODNA stands for Convicted Offender DNA. Minnesota Statute 609.117 and Minnesota Statute 299C.105 requires all persons convicted of or charged with felony level offenses and convicted of any charge under the same set of circumstances to provide a biological specimen for the purpose of DNA analysis. Law enforcement, court services, and probation agencies throughout the state of Minnesota collect these samples and send them to the BCA. Once samples arrive at the BCA, the offender's information is entered into the CODNA database, which serves as an offender index. The offender's sample is then assigned a number, DNA profiled, imported to the State CODIS database, and uploaded into the National database of CODIS without any identifying information.
