IRP and IFTA temporary permits
A vehicle owned and currently registered by an out-of-state resident and not apportioned with Minnesota, may obtain a temporary Minnesota registration permit.
Qualified vehicle requirements:
A truck, truck tractor, or bus registered to an out of state resident with:
- Gross vehicle weight or registered gross vehicle weight exceeding 26,000 pounds.
- Three or more axles, regardless of gross vehicle weight.
- Used in combination when the gross weight of such combination exceeds 26,000 pounds .
- Permits may be issued at 26,000 pounds or less if the vehicle is involved in intrastate transportation in Minnesota.
Please note that:
- Minnesota residents do not qualify, with the exception of a weight increase permit.
- Only 1 permit may be issued to a vehicle within a 30 day time period.
- Maximum weight on a trip permit is 80,000 pounds.
- A valid Interstate U.S. Department of Transportation number is required.
- A temporary fuel permit may also be required unless the vehicle is covered by a current International Fuel Tax Agreement (IFTA) license, fuel reciprocity agreement or is a two-axle vehicle under 26,001 pounds.
- Exempt: Buses used in the transportation of charter parties, recreational vehicles and government owned vehicles
- Before submitting your request, please review all the information for accuracy as a permit cannot be cancelled or corrected once it has been issued.
- No refunds for a temporary registration permit after it has been issued will be granted.
