Cards use the state of Minnesota branding and colors, along with a custom background featuring the breaking rocks of the headwater of the Mississippi River, images of a pine forest and a canoeist enjoying the state’s natural resources.
The current card was redesigned in 2018. It replaced a previous design in use since 2004.

Minnesota has a three card options to choose from:
- Standard driver's license or ID card
- Enhanced driver's license or ID card
- REAL ID-compliant driver's license or ID card
