HSEM Offers Disaster Recovery Conference
Monday, October 07, 2013
Emergency Managers from across Minnesota learned about disaster recovery, including how to conduct an Initial Damage Assessment, during a 3-day conference hosted recently by HSEM.
Initial Damage Assessments are a crucial first step in requesting financial assistance following severe weather. The Recovery-Mitigation branch showed participants how to best collect damage information.
The conference was held at the Emergency Management Training Center at Camp Ripley which allowed emergency managers to go beyond the classroom and use the on-site town. HSEM staff created damage scenarios at each station so participants could practice their assessment skills. Branch Director John Moore says, "Educating the local emergency management officials is a paramount priority for HSEM. The knowledge gained by this training will pay tremendous dividends to the impacted communities as they strive to recover from natural disasters."

Hundreds of Boy Scouts from the eastern metro area gathered this weekend near Cannon Falls, Minn. to participate in training for the new Boy Scout Merit Badge in “Search and Rescue”. HSEM attended the training as an observer and evaluator.
The boys learned about the Incident Command System and received training in search procedures, working with search dogs, victim extraction, water rescues, GPS and map coordinates and other important topics.
They then participated in a variety of simulated scenarios to test their training including tornado, lost child, water rescue and airplane crash.
Boy Scouts help to remove a "victim" from a simulated airplane crash during Search and Rescue training.
