State Prison Dashboards

The state prison dashboards include data collected by the Minnesota Department of Corrections (DOC), which oversees ten state prisons for adults and all individuals committed to the commissioner of corrections as a result of a felony-level convictions. These data do not include individuals held in county jails, with the exception of state prisoners temporarily held in county facilities. Most of the data included in the following dashboards can be found in the DOC’s published Adult Inmate Profile reports, which can be found .

Definitions:

Prison Admissions: Admissions are broken out into three categories: (1) new commitments, (2) release returns, and (3) release returns with new sentences.

  • New commitments include all prisoners committed to the commissioner of corrections as the result of a new offense conviction.
  • Release returns include individuals previously released from state prison to complete the remainder of their sentences under community supervision, but were returned to state prison for violating the conditions of release.
  • Release returns with new sentences include individuals previously released from state prison to complete the remainder of their sentences under community supervision, but were returned to state prison with a new offense conviction (in addition to the conviction(s) for which they are still serving time).

Prison Releases: Releases are broken out into four categories: (1) supervised release, (2) community program releases (3) discharge, and (4) other type of release.

  • Supervised release includes all prisoners released from prison to complete one-third or less of their remaining sentences under supervision in the community. This release category includes standard supervision and intensive supervised release (ISR).
  • Community program releases includes early release programs that allow prisoners to complete portions of their sentences in lower security settings, including work release and the Challenge Incarceration Program (CIP).
  • Discharge releases include all prisoners released from prison after the completion of their entire sentences. Because they have completed their sentences, these prisoners are not under any form of community supervision upon release from prison.
  • Other types of releases include a small number of exceptional releases, including conditional medical releases.
