ST. PAUL — The Minnesota Department of Public Safety Bureau of Criminal Apprehension (BCA) is investigating the circumstances surrounding an officer involved shooting incident that happened earlier today in Hermantown.

Two Hermantown police officers and a St. Louis County sheriff’s deputy shortly after 3 p.m. pursued a motorcyclist who was traveling northbound on Midway Road just past West Arrowhead Road at speeds in excess of 100 miles per hour. The officers called off their pursuit near Miller Trunk Highway and Ugstad Road.

St. Louis County sheriff’s deputies spotted the motorcyclist a short time later near Stebner Road and Village Drive. They pursued the subject briefly until the motorcycle became stuck and the motorcyclist attempted to flee on foot. At one point during the encounter shots were fired. At another point the subject was struck by a squad car.

St. Louis County and Hermantown law enforcement personnel rendered medical aid but the subject was pronounced deceased at the scene. The deceased will be taken to the Midwest Medical Examiner’s Office for identification and autopsy.

BCA crime scene personnel recovered a gun at the scene. BCA investigators will determine whether squad cameras captured the incident. Law enforcement were not wearing body cameras.

The Duluth Police Department and Minnesota State Patrol provided assistance securing the scene.

Additional information, including the names of the deceased and the deputies involved, will be provided once identification and family notification has taken place and the initial round of interviews is complete.

The BCA is conducting the investigation at the request of the St. Louis County Sheriff’s Office. When the investigation is complete, the BCA will present its findings without recommendation to the St. Louis County Attorney’s Office for review.
