ST. PAUL —The Ramsey County Medical Examiner’s Office has identified the individual who died during an officer involved shooting incident in the Itasca County city of Cohasset early Saturday morning. The medical examiner says Adam Russell Schneider, 31, of 460 2nd Street NW in Cohasset, died of gunshot wounds.
Itasca County Sheriff’s Office Deputy Stephen Snyder, who has been with the sheriff’s office for four years, is on standard administrative leave.
The Minnesota Department of Public Safety Bureau of Criminal Apprehension (BCA) is investigating the incident at the request of the Itasca County Sheriff’s Office.
According to the preliminary investigation, on Saturday morning at 2:49 a.m. Itasca County sheriff’s deputies responded to a 9-1-1 call of a disturbance at Schneider’s home. When deputies arrived, a man now identified as Adam Schneider was standing outside of the home holding a shotgun. Schneider ignored repeated orders from deputies to put the gun down, and then pointed the gun at the deputies. Deputy Snyder fired his gun, striking Schneider. Schneider was taken by Meds 1 ambulance to Grand Itasca Hospital where he died.
The Itasca County Sheriff’s Office, Minnesota State Patrol and Grand Rapids Police Department provided assistance at the scene.
When its investigation is complete, the BCA will present its findings to the Itasca County Attorney’s Office for review.
