Law Enforcement Officers Identified in Shoreview Officer Involved Shooting

Two law enforcement officers involved in a shooting on December 17 in Shoreview have been identified.

  • Deputy Matthew Hagen has been with the Hennepin County Sheriff’s Office for 15 years.
  • Officer Alan Salvosa is a four-year veteran of the Brooklyn Center Police Department.

Both Deputy Hagen and Officer Salvosa are on standard administrative leave.

Law enforcement from Brooklyn Center Police Department, Hennepin County Sheriff’s Office, Maple Grove Police Department, New Brighton Police Department, Ramsey County Sheriff’s Office and the Minnesota State Patrol were pursuing a suspect in a homicide which had just occurred in Maple Grove. The pursuit came to an end just after 1 a.m. when the suspect’s vehicle crashed on eastbound I-694 just west of Rice Street in Shoreview.

According to the preliminary investigation, the suspect, identified yesterday by the Ramsey County Medical Examiner as Johnathon Dean Mar, 18, of Kennewick, Washington, emerged from the vehicle with a knife and began repeatedly stabbing himself. Mar ignored repeated commands from law enforcement to stop and get on the ground. At that point, Mar charged at the officers with the knife. Deputy Hagen and Officer Salvosa then fired their weapons, striking Mar multiple times. Allina EMS was dispatched and upon arrival pronounced Mar deceased. The Ramsey County Medical Examiner determined Mar died of multiple gunshot wounds.

The Bureau of Criminal Apprehension (BCA) is investigating the incident at the request of the Hennepin County Sheriff’s Office and the Brooklyn Center Police Department. Agents have completed preliminary interviews with officers on the scene. Analysis of evidence collected at the scene is ongoing. When the investigation is completed, the BCA will turn its findings over to the Ramsey County Attorney’s Office for review.

The homicide in Maple Grove is being investigated by the Maple Grove Police Department.
