FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
July 08, 2013
Minnesota Violent Crimes Up Slightly in 2012
Bureau of Criminal Apprehension Releases 2012 Uniform Crime Report

Minnesota saw a slight rise in its most serious crimes in 2012. The Minnesota Bureau of Criminal Apprehension (BCA) today released its 2012 Uniform Crime Report. It shows a 3.4 percent increase in violent crimes compared to 2011.

Local law enforcement agencies are required to report their crime data to the BCA to meet state and federal reporting requirements. The BCA compiles the data into its annual reports and provides required data to the FBI for its reporting purposes.

Violent Crimes

Aggravated Assault 6,721 6,364 5.6%

While in 2012 murder saw a 26 percent increase over 2011, data collected over the past five years show significant fluctuation in this number. Rapes maintained a slightly lower rate in 2012 than had been seen in 2008-2011. Robbery continues a steady downward trend and aggravated assault saw a small increase after steady declines over the past several years.
