ST. PAUL — The two police officers and the deceased subject have been identified following an officer involved shooting incident on January 20 in Fairmont, Minn.
- Officer Craig Fowler has been with the Fairmont Police Department for 14 years.
- Sergeant James Tietje has been with the Fairmont Police Department for 14 years.
The Ramsey County Medical Examiner has identified the person who died during the incident as Nicholas Daniel Moore, 23, of 1205 Victoria Street, apartment 103, in Fairmont.
The Minnesota Department of Public Safety Bureau of Criminal Apprehension is investigating the incident at the request of the Fairmont Police Department.
According to the BCA's preliminary investigation, Officers Fowler and Tietje responded to a 911 call at 2:20 a.m. concerning someone being threatened in an apartment building in the 1200 block of Victoria Street in Fairmont. When the officers, arrived, they were confronted by Moore who had two knives. Moore came at the officers, and
Officer Fowler fired his weapon; Moore was pronounced dead at the scene. Sergeant Tietje did not fire his weapon.
Officer Fowler sustained minor injuries while attempting to retreat from the subject and was transported to Mayo Clinic Health Systems Fairmont Campus where he was treated and released. Both officers remain on standard administrative leave during the investigation. The Fairmont Police Department does not use body cams.
The investigation is active and ongoing. When completed, the BCA will turn over its findings to the Martin County Attorney’s Office for review.
