Update on Officer Involved Shooting Investigation

ST. PAUL — The police officer and sheriff’s deputy who discharged their weapons during an officer involved shooting incident on December 22, in the city of Gilbert, have been identified:

  • Deputy Derrick Deutsch has been with the Saint Louis County Sheriff's Office for one year. He was with the Kanabec County Sheriff’s Office for two years before that.
  • Officer Joseph Bradach has been with the Gilbert Police Department for six years.

The Midwest Medical Examiner’s Office previously identified the person who died during the incident as Jeffrey John Golnick, 40, of Chaska.

According to the Minnesota Department of Public Safety Bureau of Criminal Apprehension’s (BCA) preliminary investigation, Deputy Deutsch and Officer Bradach were looking for an individual wanted on a warrant at a residence on the 100 block of Michigan Ave. W. Golnick was not the individual wanted on the warrant. At that location, they identified a vehicle with two occupants. While Officer Bradach was making contact with the two individuals, Golnick fled from the residence on foot. At one point,

Golnick fired his gun, striking the deputy. Deputy Deutsch and Officer Bradach returned fire, striking Golnick, who was pronounced deceased at the scene. The BCA recovered a handgun at the scene.

Deputy Deutsch was treated at St. Luke's Hospital in Duluth for a non-life-threatening gunshot wound and released the same day.

The BCA is investigating the incident at the request of the Gilbert Police Department and the St. Louis County Sheriff’s Office. The investigation is active and ongoing. When completed, the BCA will turn over its findings to the St. Louis County Attorney’s Office for review.
