NATIONAL WEATHER SERVICE FORECAST STILL POINTS TO MAJOR FLOODING

ST. PAUL — The National Weather Service (NWS) today issued a updated flood forecast that still shows widespread flooding across Minnesota.  Major flooding is expected up and down the Red River valley and forecasters believe water levels in the Moorhead area could exceed 2009 flood levels.

In the Minnesota and Mississippi river basins, a second crest is expected sometime in April. “The height of the second crest will depend on how much precipitation we receive and how quickly our temperatures warm up,” said John Margraf, NWS meteorologist.

“State agencies in the State Emergency Operations Center are working together to make sure Minnesotans will be safe and prepared when the waters rise,” said Kris Eide, Homeland Security and Emergency Management director.

The Minnesota Department of Transportation (Mn/DOT) is reporting the following road closures:

·         Highways 101 and 41 over the Minnesota river in Chaska, Savage and Shakopee

Mn/DOT is monitoring:

·         Highway 99 east of St. Peter

·         Highway 22 south of St. Peter

·         169 between Mankato and St. Peter
