​ST. PAUL – The Minnesota Department of Public Safety Bureau of Criminal Apprehension (BCA) has identified the people involved in a use-of-force incident April 15 in Montrose. Matthew Lyrek, 38, of Montrose was shot multiple times during the incident. He remains hospitalized in stable condition.

Seven Wright County sheriff's deputies used force during this incident. The Wright County sheriff informed the BCA that one of the deputies works in an undercover capacity. In accordance with Minnesota Statute 13.82, subdivision 17 (a) the BCA is prohibited from releasing the undercover deputy's identity. The other deputies involved are:

• Deputy Matthew Bilitz used less-than-lethal force. He has six years of law enforcement experience.
• Deputy Heath Gilliham deployed his Taser. He has 32 years of law enforcement experience.
• Deputy William Kenyon deployed his Taser. He has 10 years of law enforcement experience.
• Deputy Andrew Lundeen fired his department rifle. He has eight years of law enforcement experience.
• Sgt. Jeff McMackins used less-than-lethal force. He has 15 years of law enforcement experience.
• Sgt. Jason Oltmanns used less-than-lethal force. He has 16 years of law enforcement experience.  

According to the preliminary investigation, Wright County sheriff's deputies were looking for Lyrek in order to arrest him on multiple felony warrants. They made contact with him just before 1 p.m. at the Dollar General store in the City of Montrose. When the deputies tried to arrest him, Lyrek pulled out a handgun. Deputies deployed Tasers, less-than-lethal force and Lundeen fired his rifle at Lyrek. He was taken to HCMC for treatment, where he remains.

BCA crime scene personnel recovered two handguns from Lyrek and additional firearms from inside his vehicle. They also recovered cartridge casings and evidence of less-lethal munition and Taser deployments. Wright County deputies do not wear body cameras but squad car cameras captured portions of the incident. BCA agents are reviewing all available video as part of the active investigation.

The Wright County Sheriff's Office asked the BCA to investigate this incident. Once the investigation is complete, the BCA will present its findings without a charging recommendation to the Wright County Attorney's Office for review.
