June 2, 2023
ST. PAUL – The Minnesota Department of Public Safety Bureau of Criminal Apprehension (BCA) has identified the people involved in a police use-of-force incident and stabbing May 30 in Mankato. The BCA continues actively investigating this incident.
- Mankato Police Officer Courtney Walker used his squad car to ram another vehicle and end a pursuit. He has 12 years of law enforcement experience.
Based on the initial investigation, police responded to West Mankato at about 1:30 p.m. Tuesday after several calls reported a man driving erratically. Mankato Police initially started a pursuit, but called it off when it became dangerous. The driver, later identified as Dustin Lee Murilla, 33, of Good Thunder, drove away. A short time later, more 911 calls started coming in about Murilla driving erratically. Officers received approval to re-engage the pursuit. When Murilla turned down a dead-end road in Mankato's Hilltop neighborhood, Officer Walker used his squad to hit Murilla's vehicle and end the pursuit. A woman in the passenger seat of Murilla's vehicle had been stabbed numerous times. Officers on scene provided medical care and she was rushed to Mankato Hospital for treatment where she remains in stable condition. The BCA is not identifying the woman in accordance with Minnesota Statute 13.82, subdivision 17 (d). Murilla was also hospitalized but has since been released and taken into custody. Officer Walker suffered minor injuries and was treated and released.
Crime scene personnel recovered a knife from Murilla's vehicle. Officer Walker was wearing his body camera and his squad car camera was active. Both captured portions of the incident, which BCA agents are reviewing as part of the investigation. The video will be available to the public once the case is closed and fully adjudicated. The Minnesota State Patrol conducted a crash reconstruction for this incident but is not assisting in the investigation.
The Mankato Department of Public Safety asked the BCA to investigate this incident. Once the investigation is complete, the BCA will present its findings without a charging recommendation to the Blue Earth County Attorney's Office for review.
