ST. PAUL — The Ramsey County Medical Examiner’s Office has identified the two men who died during a Aug. 11 use-of-force incident in Moorhead. According to the medical examiner, the men have been identified as Nathan Heiberg, 42, of Moorhead and Lucas Heiberg, 41, of Grand Forks, N.D.
The Minnesota Department of Public Safety’s Bureau of Criminal Apprehension (BCA) has identified the Fargo, N.D., police officers who used force during this incident. All three officers were members of the multi-jurisdictional Red River Valley SWAT Team and were placed on critical incident leave by the Fargo Police Department.
- Sgt. Michael Anderson fired his department issued firearm. He has 10 years of law enforcement experience.
- Sgt. Kyle Seehusen fired his department issued firearm. He has 12 years of law enforcement experience.
- Officer Tyler Seehusen fired his department issued firearm. He has eight years of law enforcement experience.
According to the BCA’s preliminary investigation, Moorhead officers were called to an apartment building on the 2400 block of Third Avenue North just after 8:45 p.m. on Aug. 11 on a report of a domestic assault and order for protection violation. The adult female victim explained that she was physically assaulted by two males, later identified as Nathan Heiberg and Lucas Heiberg. The female victim stated that two children, ages 5 and 6, were also inside the apartment.
Officers went to the apartment connected to the assault investigation and attempted to talk to Nathan and Lucas. They did not respond. While officers were positioned in the hallway outside the apartment, they began to force the door open when a firearm was discharged inside the residence.
Officers backed away, called for additional officers to respond and began to evacuate nearby apartments. The Red River Valley SWAT Team responded to assist the Moorhead Police Department. At some point, SWAT officers entered the apartment and shots were fired. Both Nathan and Lucas were fatally struck. The two children were located inside the apartment uninjured.
Officers and medics provided medical aid to both Nathan and Lucas. Lucas was pronounced dead at the apartment. Nathan was transported by ambulance to the hospital where he died a short time after arriving.
BCA crime scene personnel recovered two firearms in the apartment. Portions of the incident were recorded by body-worn cameras.
The Moorhead Police Department requested the BCA to investigate. Once the investigation is complete, the BCA will present its findings without recommendation to the Clay County Attorney’s Office for review.
