BCA releases identities of individuals and deputy involved in Appleton use-of-force incident

March 20, 2026

ST. PAUL — The Minnesota Department of Public Safety’s Bureau of Criminal Apprehension (BCA) has identified the individuals involved in the March 13 use-of-force incident in Appleton as Brandon Corbett, 32, and Sujin Corbett, 36, both residents of Appleton.

The BCA also identified the Swift County Sheriff’s Office deputy who used force during this incident.

  • Deputy Matt Siefkes fired his department-issued firearm. He has 19 years of law enforcement experience. The Swift County Sheriffs Office has placed him on critical incident leave.

According to the BCA’s preliminary investigation, Swift County deputies and officers from the Appleton and Benson police departments responded to a suspicious activity call at approximately 9:15 a.m. on March 13. A 911 caller reported two suspects breaking into a green SUV on the 100 block of Reuss Avenue in Appleton. Responding officers were later informed that shots had been fired into a nearby residence by these two suspects.

Swift County deputies located a green SUV matching the description parked near the home and occupied by a male and female, later identified as Brandon and Sujin Corbett. Deputies ordered them out of the vehicle. As they exited the vehicle one of them fired shots in the direction of the deputies. Deputy Siefkes returned fire and Brandon and Sujin Corbett re‑entered the SUV, barricaded themselves and refused to surrender.

Authorities established a perimeter around the area and made multiple attempts to communicate with them and bring the situation to a peaceful resolution, but those efforts were unsuccessful. Less‑lethal projectiles were fired at them at varying times during this incident but were not effective in resolving the situation. The West Central SWAT Team later inserted chemical irritants into the vehicle, prompting both Brandon and Sujin Corbett to exit the SUV and be taken into custody.

Neither of them was injured by gunfire during this incident. Both were transported to local hospitals for evaluation. No law enforcement officers were injured.

BCA crime scene personnel recovered a handgun and multiple spent cartridge casings.  Body-worn cameras, along with in-car squad cameras, were in use and captured portions of this incident.

The Swift County Sheriff’s Office requested the BCA investigate this use-of-force incident. Once the investigation is complete, the BCA will present its findings without recommendation to the Swift County Attorney’s Office for review.
