Minnesota Bureau of Criminal Apprehension update on Alex Pretti shooting death investigation
Feb. 6, 2026
ST. PAUL — The Minnesota Department of Public Safety’s Bureau of Criminal Apprehension (BCA) remains committed to working with the Federal Bureau of Investigation and U.S. Department of Justice to identify the best path forward and investigate the Jan. 24 shooting death of Alex Pretti. Those plans have not been finalized.
The BCA has been clear from the day of the shooting about its desire to work cooperatively with the FBI on cases like this as the agency has in the past. BCA leadership has communicated this directly to the FBI, and both agencies remain committed to continuing those conversations.
The Minneapolis Police Department requested the BCA investigate the incident involving federal agents, which happened on Jan. 24 just after 9 a.m. on the 2600 block of Nicollet Avenue South. Pretti, 37, was officially identified on Feb. 2 by the Hennepin County Medical Examiner’s Office.
BCA Force Investigations Unit agents immediately began an independent investigation that has been ongoing to this day. As part of a broader investigation, BCA agents have collected witness statements, collected physical evidence and video evidence that captured the circumstances related to this incident.
“A thorough and impartial investigative process that is objective, worthy of public trust and guided by Minnesota’s established investigative standards is critical,” said BCA Superintendent Drew Evans. “A cooperative approach helps ensure Minnesotans can trust the outcome of this review.”
Anyone with information about this case is urged to contact the BCA at 651-793-7000 or by email at bca.tips@state.mn.us.
When the investigation is complete, the BCA will present its findings without recommendation to a prosecutorial authority for review.
