Dragging your feet on REAL ID? Now is the time to apply!

December 16, 2024

Have you been putting off getting your REAL ID? While past deadline changes and confusion over required documents may make it tempting to delay, the federal deadline is now fewer than five months away.

As of May 7, 2025, Minnesotans will not be able to use a standard driver's license to board a plane within the United States or visit some federal buildings. Instead, they’ll need a REAL ID compliant license or federal passport. Applying ahead of the deadline can help you avoid potential long lines and wait times.

However, some people may find the required documentation overwhelming, presenting a barrier to applying.

“We understand the documents required for REAL ID can be confusing. We want to demystify that and make it easier for people to apply,” said Driver and Vehicle Services (DVS) Director Pong Xiong.

Besides knowing your Social Security number, you only really need three documents. And they’re things most people have readily available in their homes.

For example, you can use one of these to prove identity, date of birth and legal presence in the U.S.:

  • Passport, birth certificate or permanent resident card

And then two of these to prove Minnesota residency:

  • Valid driver's license, bank statement, utility bill or tax return

According to DVS, the three most common documents Minnesotans use to apply are a birth certificate, bank statement and utility bill (primarily gas and electric).

If you're concerned about having the right documentation, you can pre-apply online and upload your documents in advance, which will ensure they meet the requirements. Just be sure to bring your documents to the office as you’ll need to present the originals.

You can also avoid some common application pitfalls by making sure:

  • All documents are original. DVS can’t accept photocopies, laminated documents or scanned, faxed or digital images. However, if your utility bills are all online, you can print out a bill and use it as proof of residence.
  • The name on the documents matches the name on your application. If not, you’ll need additional documentation. You can find a complete list on our REAL ID page

So don’t delay – apply for your REAL ID today!
