Want a gold star? Get your REAL ID.
March 26, 2025
Torri Agnew has helped thousands of people get their REAL ID over the past seven years. Their reasons vary, but her favorite: Some people just want the gold star.
The most common reason is that people plan to board a plane after May 7. Agnew, who serves in our Driver and Vehicle Services (DVS) division, helped Josey P. get his REAL ID in March so he would be ready for a June flight.
“I decided to get my REAL ID today for travel purposes,” said Josey. “It’s easier to carry a REAL ID than a passport. I was coming in today anyway to renew my standard license because my birthday is coming up. So, I figured I’d upgrade to a REAL ID.”
What exactly is a REAL ID?
A REAL ID is a state-issued driver’s license and identification card that meets federal identification security guidelines. It’s designed to make counterfeiting more difficult and ensures licenses and IDs meet specific requirements for accessing federal buildings and boarding domestic flights.
You will need a REAL ID to fly within the U.S. on or after May 7, but that doesn’t mean you need to rush to get one.
Agnew says it’s important for people to know they can get a REAL ID after May 7, especially if they don’t plan to fly until next fall or winter. Minnesotans can make an appointment with DVS for June, July or even August and still get their license in time to fly in October.
People come into exam stations throughout the day to get a Real ID. For most it’s a smooth process but for others the appointment can become a bit frustrating.
“For many customers, the transaction starts out pleasant. But sometimes that pleasant, chill mood changes as they realize they do not have the correct documents,” Agnew added.
Agnew feels bad for customers when they don’t bring the required documents and have to come back later to complete their application. Reviewing what’s required for a REAL ID before their appointment can help people avoid a second trip.
