Honoring the fallen

Honoring the fallen

October 11, 2024

The noble calling of public safety requires a unique combination of dedication to serve all, courage under duress, and the humanity to help others in perhaps their darkest moments. Minnesota's first responders are interwoven in the fabric of our communities. They are the mothers, fathers, loved ones, and neighbors of Minnesotans as they answer the call to serve each and every day.

Being part of the team that helps organize a fallen first responder's funeral is one of the most profound honors for the Minnesota Department of Public Safety and our Office of Communications.

In moments of great loss, we often are asked to serve as a bridge between the family, the department and the public. We are proud to help ensure that our fallen first responders' final tribute reflects the dignity and sacrifice of the individual, while coordinating respectful media coverage and public communications.

The work is often emotionally charged, but it is also deeply rewarding. We have the responsibility of highlighting the legacy of service, bravery, and dedication that defines a first responder’s career. We support the family’s wishes, ensure the ceremony honors the responder’s contributions and help the community mourn together.

Helping with a fallen first responder's funeral allows us to provide comfort, respect and lasting recognition during one of the most meaningful moments in public service. It is both a duty and a privilege to be part of such an important farewell.
