Thousands of motorcyclists gear up for this weekend’s Fall Flood Run

Sept. 17, 2026

State officials remind riders there’s been a 40 percent increase in motorcycle fatalities

St. Paul — Thousands of motorcyclists will participate in the Fall Flood Run, a three-day event beginning tomorrow, Sept. 18. The route takes riders along the scenic Mississippi and St. Croix Valley roadways between Twin Cities east metro and Winona.

Riders and motorists should be alert and use extra caution as they share the road this weekend. Cooperation from riders and motorists is needed to ensure a safe event, said Jay Bock, motorcycle safety administrator for the Minnesota Motorcycle Safety Center.

There has been a significant increase in motorcyclist fatalities this year, 63 compared with 45 in 2025. Bock emphasized any increase is unacceptable. “But a 40 percent increase is devasting, especially in the riding community. Every fatality means a family is mourning and a community lost someone,” he said.

With rain in the forecast, motorcyclists should drive for weather conditions and within their skillset, Bock said. “Making smart choices can save lives. It can ensure both motorists and riders get home safely.”

Law enforcement agencies in southeast Minnesota, along with Minnesota State Patrol troopers, will be patrolling the area during the event to ensure a safe riding environment.

Safety tips

The Minnesota Motorcycle Safety Center offers these safety tips.

Motorists

  • Watch for motorcycles. Due to their smaller size, it is more difficult to judge their speed and distance.
  • Make room for group riders in staggered or side-by-side formation.
  • Always look twice before entering a roadway or changing lanes.
  • Give riders room and check blind spots before changing lanes or making a turn.

Riders

  • Be prepared for inattentive drivers by staying focused on riding and keeping your speed in check.
  • If riding in a group, use single file in curves. Use the two-second following rule and proper rider formation.
  • If lane splitting, do not go over 25 mph in moving traffic or more than 15 mph over the speed of traffic.
  • If lane filtering, do not exceed 15 mph over the speed of traffic when traffic is stopped.
  • Wear proper gear, including a helmet approved by the U.S. Department of Transportation and brightly colored protective gear for visibility and protection.
  • Ride sober. One-third of all motorcycle fatalities involve impaired riders.
