A statement from the two mothers of Chantel Moose

May 19, 2025

Editor's note: The two mothers of Chantel Moose, Shawna Moose-Shamley and Chantel's aunt/guardian Tammy DeFoe, released the following statement.

A video statement is also available for download.

"Today there is so much focus on the person who killed Chantel.

But as a family, our focus is on the one we lost, and on the things that Chantel will miss out on. We want to tell you about who we lost that day, about the person who was taken from our family.

Chantel Moose was a mother. Chantel Moose was a sister to her siblings and the large community of cousins she was raised with.

Chantel was given a lot to overcome in life. She was trying her best. She was doing the work to make a good life for herself and her daughter. Whenever you saw her with her daughter she was on top of the world.

Chantel was smart and independent. She wanted to do so many things. She was artistic. She loved music, dance and she had a great sense of humor.

Chantel set her mind to getting her GED and attending college classes. She had pulled herself up and out of a shelter. She went to prom. She had graduated from high school.  She was so proud of that accomplishment. She had gotten a job and was proud that too.

We will never know all of what she could have accomplished.

She had a lot of life ahead of her and that was all taken away."

Future updates will be released on the Justice For Chantel Moose Facebook page.
