ST. PAUL — The Midwest Medical Examiner’s Office has identified the man who died early Saturday morning during an encounter with law enforcement in Eden Valley.
The medical examiner said Stephen Christ Poissant, 34, of Brainerd died of a single self-inflicted gunshot wound to the head.
The officer with whom Poissant exchanged gunfire during the incident has also been identified. Officer Evan Borscheid discharged his firearm, resulting in a graze injury to Poissant’s knee. Officer Borscheid has been in law enforcement for five years. Officer Borscheid was not injured and is on standard administrative leave.
The incident began as an attempted traffic stop for speeding and a headlight violation. The Meeker County Sheriff’s Office released additional information about the incident on Feb. 12.
The incident was captured on squad camera video. A gun was recovered at the scene.
The BCA investigation of the officer’s use of force is ongoing. When the investigation is complete the BCA will provide its findings without recommendation to the Meeker County Attorney’s Office for review.
