Information for system partners
An extreme risk protection order (ERPO) is one tool communities can use to help prevent violence, suicide and crisis situations before tragedy occurs.
While only certain individuals are authorized to petition for an ERPO, many system partners including schools, healthcare providers, mental health professionals, faith leaders and law enforcement can play a critical role in recognizing warning signs, responding to safety concerns and helping connect people to support.
Whether you are identifying concerning behavior, supporting someone in crisis or coordinating with law enforcement, your actions can help reduce immediate risk and protect lives.
ERPOs are not a substitute for treatment or prevention. They can provide an important temporary safeguard during periods of extreme risk. By understanding the law and working together across systems, we can create safer outcomes for individuals, families and communities.

Request for proposals
We are seeking proposals from qualified research institutions to conduct a comprehensive assessment of the implementation and impact of Minnesota’s ERPO law.
The aim is to collect, review and analyze all ERPO petitions in the state since the implementation of the law; identify trends, patterns and areas of improvement through quantitative and qualitative analysis of the ERPO petitions; and provide actionable recommendations for improvement based on the assessment findings.
Requests for proposals (RFPs) are due by 4 p.m. on Monday, May 11. To view the RFP, search for solicitation reference number 4979 on the Professional and Technical Solicitation Postings.
For questions related to ERPO policy and practice, contact ERPO Coordinator Samantha Hoyt.
