Super Bowl weekend can be both fun and safe
Jan. 18, 2018
You may already have heard, but the state of Minnesota passed a law last year (check out Section 18) saying that individual cities can allow local bars to stay open until 4 a.m. over Super Bowl weekend, Feb. 2-5. That’s good news for revelers who want to spend time with their friends and soak up the atmosphere of this historic event.
But just like any occasion involving alcohol, there are important decisions to be made, whether you’re consuming or not. For example, if you do plan to be out drinking at a bar in a city that allows the extended hours, be sure to line up your sober ride ahead of time, whether it’s a cab, a car service, or a designated driver.
And if you’ve agreed to be a designated driver that weekend, just keep in mind that even though you’ll be sober, you’re likely to be more tired if you leave at 4 a.m. Consider taking a nap beforehand to make sure you’re alert on the road later. And of course, stay off your phone. Distracted driving has proven to be deadly even under the best of circumstances.
Lastly, if your work or travel schedule takes you to or through one of these municipalities that weekend, just be aware that there will be more people on the roads late. Be on the lookout for drunk drivers, stay off your phone, and wear your seatbelt – it’s the best way to get out of a crash alive.
Whether you’re partying, driving, or just passing through, Super Bowl weekend promises to be a great time. And with a little preparation and forethought, it can be a safe time, too.
