What’s the first thing you do when you need to know Minnesota’s driver’s license rules, fire regulations or the latest requirements for child passenger safety? If you’re like most Minnesotans, you immediately pull out a smartphone and check online for the answers.

That's part of the reason we’re launching a new Department of Public Safety (DPS) website later this fall — to make it easier than ever to get the information you need whenever and wherever you need it. Our new website — which will still be found at dps.mn.gov — will give all Minnesotans a better user experience by modernizing the design, making it mobile friendly and refining how the content is organized.

“This website is about serving all communities to build a safer Minnesota. That’s why for over a year our talented team has been crafting a website that not only looks modern and fresh but is designed to make your experience smoother and more intuitive. We’re excited to unveil it to you later this year,” said DPS Deputy Commissioner Cassandra O’Hern. “We’re confident the new site will make finding the information you need easier than ever.”

The new site is more than just a fresh look — it's a tool for better communication and collaboration. Whether connecting with DPS staff or exploring public safety information, the new website makes it easier to stay informed and engaged.

The new site, which incorporates feedback from users like you, is focused on providing content that’s easy to understand and find, getting you the right information at the right time so you can make decisions about how to keep yourself and others safe. Improved navigation and intuitive organization mean you will spend less time searching and more time getting the answers you need.

The new site includes a new and widely used content management system, which will improve our efficiency, making it easier for DPS staff to keep the website’s information current, ensuring that the public has access to the latest updates.

Not only will information be easier to understand and locate, DPS's commitment to serving all Minnesotans is reflected in the new website's enhanced accessibility features. How? Staff have made sure the site meets or exceeds state and federal standards, so everyone can easily access the information and services they need.

We're also incorporating new ways to protect your data. The new website comes with enhanced cybersecurity measures to protect sensitive public safety information. We’ll have around the clock monitoring and emergency response by our website vendor and Minnesota IT Services to protect against reported attacks — and deflect attacks before they can make an impact — to keep the website and information secure. The new system allows us to keep private data safe and includes backups and redundancy in case disaster strikes.
