Protect your legacy this National Preparedness Month

Sept. 15, 2022

When you hear the word “legacy" what do you think of? Your children? Your older relatives? Your house? Now think about the hazards and threats that could put them all at risk.

The life you've built is worth protecting. Our division of Homeland Security and Emergency Management (HSEM) is here to help you protect your legacy from potential emergencies. HSEM is working with FEMA to show you how to create a legacy that lasts through whatever nature throws at you.

Emergencies are never planned, which is why National Preparedness Month raises awareness about the importance of preparing for disasters and emergencies. This month, HSEM and FEMA challenge you and your loved ones to put a plan in place and build an emergency supply kit.

Emergency plans are unique to each family's needs. You'll want your plan to answer key questions such as:

  • How will I receive emergency alerts?
  • What is my shelter plan?
  • What is my evacuation route?
  • How will I communicate with family members if we're separated?

Your plan should be tailored to the needs of your household, including dietary needs, medical requirements and the languages spoken by family members. If you have kids, talk to them about being prepared so they know how to stay safe and navigate potentially scary situations. Also, make sure they know important phone numbers.

Don't forget to include a plan for your pets and their needs. Add a selfie with you and your four-legged buddy in case you get separated and make sure they're microchipped, wearing a collar, and have an ID tag and a leash.

Your family will also need a basic disaster supplies kit. Among other items, it should include enough food and water for every family member for three days. Don't forget medications and a first aid kit. You can find a full list of items to include on our National Preparedness Month webpage.

After assembling your kit remember to maintain it regularly so it's ready when needed:

  • Keep canned food in a cool, dry place.
  • Store boxed food in tightly closed plastic or metal containers.
  • Replace expired items as needed.

Re-think your needs every year and update your kit as your family's needs change. Your family may not be together when a disaster strikes so it is important to plan in advance: how you will get to a safe place; how you will contact one another; how you will get back together; and what you will do in different situations.

Emergencies can come on quickly and leave you needing to act fast. Being prepared can make sure you don't forget anything and are able to keep everyone in your family safe.
