Hiring a Peace Officer

Candidates become eligible for a peace officer license when they pass the POST board’s peace officer licensing exam or the reciprocity licensing exam. Eligibility is valid for three years, after which the candidate must pass the reinstatement of eligibility exam to continue their eligible period. Licensing can only occur when the eligible candidate is appointed to a peace officer position by a Minnesota law enforcement agency.

Agency Requirements

The agency must submit a request for peace officer license application and fee for the candidate. The application attests to the candidate having met all job-related selection standards and having had use of force training.

Please refer to the licensing section of the Administrator’s Manual under the Model Policies/Learning Objectives tab and the Request for Peace Officer License application under the Forms tab.
