Importers FAQ

A license is required to import in and ship to a licensed wholesale distributor


Questions regarding taxation should be discussed with the Minnesota Department of Revenue’s Special Taxes division at 651/556-3036.

How long is an Importer’s License valid?

The license is valid 1 year from the date approved. 

Our company current holds an importer’s license….

but we’ve moved

Please mail a copy of your new TTB Basic Permit/Brewer’s Notice, along with a letter explaining the changes.

we would like to add/remove a wholesaler

Does your agency require monthly reporting?

Monthly price postings are only required when importing in Distilled Spirits.  The Import Price Filing form is required to be submitted each month, one month prior to the month submitting for (i.e. submit August 1 for September 1 pricing).

Does the State require a bond for an importer’s license?

The state does not require a bond for this license type.

Malt Beverage Importer, how do I apply?

Via mail submit the completed Malt Beverage Import application, a copy of the TTB Basic Permit/Brewer’s Notice, and the $1,600 licensing fee.

Wine/Distilled Spirits Importer, how do I apply?

Via mail submit the completed Wine/Distilled Spirits Import application, a copy of the TTB Basic Permit, and the $420 licensing fee.
