Midwest Automated Fingerprint Identification Network (MAFIN)

The Midwest Automated Fingerprint Identification Network (MAFIN) is a regional criminal history database consisting of arrest records from Minnesota and North Dakota. The arrest records consist of Ten Print fingerprint cards and may also include palm print cards. MAFIN is maintained by the Minnesota Justice Information Systems (MNJIS) department of the BCA. MAFIN can also be used to access the federal Next Generation Identification (NGI) database which is maintained by the FBI.

Unidentified latent prints recovered from crime scenes can be searched in the MAFIN database. Unique features present in the latent print are plotted by their position and angle, and ridges are traced. The resulting configuration of features is searched by the computer against the known arrest records in the database, comparing it to the configurations previously extracted in the arrest records, and produces a list of top possible matching candidates. The list is then reviewed by a latent print examiner to determine if a matching candidate is indeed present.
