Use-of-deadly-force incidents: Information for families
The primary contact for families while the Bureau of Criminal Apprehension (BCA) is investigating an officer use-of-force incident is the BCA Victim, Family and Community Relations Coordinator.
- Explains the BCA investigative process
- Provides status updates during the investigation
- Explains when and how families can view body camera video of the incident and helps coordinate viewing upon request
- Notifies families about the county attorney’s decision in the case. Their review and decision process can take months to complete
- Assists the family in obtaining the case file and reviewing the case
- Provides references to resources as needed
- Assists families in obtaining personal effects and items after case conclusion
The Victim, Family and Community Relations Coordinator will reach out to the family within 24 hours of the incident or as soon as possible to establish contact and open a line of communication that will last until the case is closed.
