National law enforcement accreditation

The Bureau of Criminal Apprehension (BCA) is in the process of becoming accredited by the Commission on Accreditation for Law Enforcement Agencies, Inc. (CALEA). Becoming a CALEA-accredited agency is a voluntary process. It requires:

  • Comprehensive and uniform written directives that clearly define authority, performance and responsibilities
  • Reports and analyses to make fact-based and informed management decisions
  • Preparedness to address natural or man-made critical incidents
  • Community relationship-building and maintenance
  • Independent review by subject matter experts
  • Continuous pursuit of excellence through annual reviews and other assessment measures

The BCA began the CALEA accreditation process in 2024. This accreditation can take several years to achieve. Once earned, it requires accreditation standards to be regularly maintained.

We want your feedback

CALEA has established a BCA Accreditation Public Comment Portal where you can provide feedback about our compliance with CALEA standards, engagement in the community, delivery of public safety services and overall candidacy for accredited status.

The intent of the accreditation process – including receiving feedback from you – is to gather information that will help us continuously improve as we strive to be an exceptional law enforcement agency.

Two important things to note:
