​Stolen guns, suicides and other statistics

Minnesota experienced an alarming increase in aggravated assaults and murders last year. And most of them were committed with a firearm.

  • More than 1,700 guns were stolen across Minnesota in 2021. Read that again. Across Minnesota — not just big cities.  
A new Pew Research survey finds 72 percent of gun owners say their own protection is a major reason why they own a gun, 81 percent feel safer owning a gun, and only 12 percent worry about having a gun in the home. Read the survey.

  • There were 513 firearm-related deaths in Minnesota in 2020. The death rate is 8.9 per 100,000 people.
    • Of these deaths, 354 (69 percent) were suicides, and 138 (27 percent) were homicides.
  • The majority of decedents (89 percent) were male. The death rate was 15.9 per 100,000 for males and 2.0 per 100,000 for females.
  • 28 Minnesotans under the age of 18 lost their lives to firearms, representing a 75 percent increase from 2010.​​
