Data privacy

Driver and Vehicle Services (DVS) maintains millions of records for Minnesota residents relating to motor vehicle and driver’s license data. 

To protect your data, we comply with federal and state laws regarding the release of motor vehicle and driver’s license data. 

Most information collected on driver's license and motor vehicle applications is not available to the public. We only release private information to individuals, companies, organizations or government agencies entitled by law to receive the information. We will also release private information when the subject of the data has authorized the release. 

Data falls into three categories: public, private and confidential.

Public data

Public data is data on an individual that anyone can see for any reason. Data about an individual not classified as private or confidential is public.

Examples of public data include:

  • Status of a driver’s license.
  • Physical description.
  • ZIP code (first five digits).
  • Unpaid fine information.
  • Convictions.
  • Reinstatement requirements.
  • License plate number.
  • Vehicle identification number (VIN).
  • Odometer reading.
  • Lienholder.
  • Registration expiration and registration tax amount.
  • Insurance company name, policy number and expiration date.

Private data

Private data is data on an individual where only the subject of the data and those specifically authorized by law may see the data. Private information does not apply to businesses. 

Examples of private data:

Confidential data

Confidential data is data on an individual that no one, including the subject, may see. It is only available to authorized department staff. 

One example of confidential data is information from a family member concerning a person’s driving ability.
