Dealer license plates

Dealer license plates are used by Minnesota motor vehicle dealers. See below for sample plate images.

At any point in time, a dealer must not possess more than fifty dealer plates.  This limit does not include in-transit plates.

Standard dealer license plates are issued to licensed dealers for vehicles held for resale by the dealers.  Dealer plates may be used by different people under specific circumstances. They may be used by:

  • The dealer (including owners, officers and board members), dealer's spouse or any full-time dealership employee for private or business reasons
  • Part-time dealership employees while conducting dealership business
  • Customers on a courtesy vehicle while the customer's vehicle is being repaired
  • Prospective buyers on a passenger vehicle or a truck up to 14 days
  • Retail purchasers for up to 72 hours after purchase.

Other dealer plate types:

  • Vehicle in-transit license plates are issued to licensed dealers for transporting vehicles from their supply source to their sales or storage facility or another dealer.
  • Drive away in-transit (transporter) license plates are issued to licensed drive-away contractors (persons or firms engaged in the business of transporting motor vehicles under their own power).
  • Manufacturer demonstration plates are issued to motor vehicle manufacturers for cold weather testing of motor vehicles.
