Restricted provisional license for new driver under age 16
A restricted provisional driver’s license allows someone under 18 years old to drive without supervision in some situations without having to hold a permit for the full six months. There are two types of restricted provisional licenses: farm work and medical reasons. You must follow all the rules for having a restricted provisional driver’s license or risk losing your driving privileges.
You may qualify for a restricted farm work driver’s license or a restricted medical driver’s license at 15 years old after completing a driver education course and passing a road test.
Farm work driver’s license
A restricted farm work driver’s license allows you to drive for farm work, regardless of whether your parent or guardian owns the farm.
To obtain a farm work driver’s license, one of the following must be true:
- Your parents or guardians own the farm. Your parent or legal guardian must fill out a farm work license form. The completed form must be presented to the driver examiner at the time of the road test, along with a current property tax statement that classifies the property as agricultural.
- Your parent or guardian rents the farmland. Your parent or legal guardian must fill out a farm work license form. The completed form must be presented to the examiner at the time of the road test, along with a rental agreement and current property tax statement that classifies the rental property as agricultural.
- You are working for a farmer who is not your parent or guardian. Your parent or guardian and the farm owner must fill out a farm work license form, attesting you need this license for purposes of farm work. The farm owner must provide a current property tax statement that classifies the property as agricultural.
You do not need to wait six months before taking the road test for this license but must apply for an instruction permit.
Restricted medical driver's license
A restricted medical driver’s license may be issued if you are at least 15 years of age, but under 16, for the purpose of driving yourself for personal medical reasons or driving a relative for medical reasons or due to a disability.
You must meet requirements and submit a completed License for Medical Reason Exemption form before you take the road test.
The form must be completed by your relative or your doctor. The Commissioner of Public Safety may set conditions and limits on your license to ensure public safety and welfare.
You do not need to wait six months before taking the road test for this license but you must apply for an instruction permit.
