CDL Class A or B for active military duty
You may be qualified to transfer your driving experience to Minnesota if you are active duty military or within one year of separation.
Your license must be valid to upgrade or add endorsements. You have up to one year after separation to upgrade your license. You must show your current military ID or DD-214.
How do I get a CDL using my military driving experience?
You should:
- Take and pass the appropriate CDL knowledge tests.
- You will provide proof of domicile before taking the test.
- Bring completed skills test waiver and military ID or DD-214 to an office that takes renewal applications.
- Pass a vision screening.
- Provide a medical self-certification.
- Apply and pay appropriate fees.
Can I waive my road test for a CDL?
You may qualify for the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA) program that allows drivers who have two years of experience safely operating heavy military vehicles to obtain a CDL without taking the road test.
You can use the skills test waiver if you are currently licensed and are or were employed within the past 12 months in a military position requiring the operation of a military motor vehicle equal or similar to a commercial motor vehicle.
Can I waive the knowledge and road test to get my CDL?
To qualify for the FMCSA’s Even Exchange Program, you would need to present a military CDL. Alternatively, you can provide evidence of military duties that are or were one of the following:
- U.S. Army:
- 88M - Motor Transport Operator
- 92F - Fueler
- 14T - Patriot Launching Station Operator
- U.S. Marine Corps:
- 3531 - Motor Vehicle Operator
- U.S. Navy:
- EO - Equipment Operator
- U.S. Air Force:
- 2TI - Vehicle Operator
- 2FO - Fueler
- 3E2 - Pavement and Construction Equipment Operator
