License and ID

Change your name on your driver's license or ID card

If you have legally changed your name, you must change it on your driver’s license or identification card.

1

Update your name with SSA

If you have a Social Security number (SSN), you need to change your name with the Social Security Administration (SSA) first.

Your full legal name must match your Social Security card. This includes suffixes, two-part last names or two-part middle names. If it does not match your legal name, you will not be able to update your driver’s license or ID.

2

Wait

Wait until the SSA tells you they have processed your name change. Check for updates online or wait for your card to come in the mail.

3

Visit a renewal office

You can visit any office that offers driver’s license or ID renewals.

You must present your current driver’s license or ID, and one of the following:
•    Certified Marriage Certificate (or marriage license with a certified recorded marriage date)
•    Certified Divorce Decree that specifies the name change
•    Certified Court Order that specifies the name change

Your name change documents need to show a clear link to the name that will be listed on your card. If you do not have and cannot get the necessary documents, you may need to apply for a variance

Before you go, use the pre-application feature for faster service. Be ready to have your photo taken.

Remember!

Do not forget to change your name on your vehicle titles.
