Motorcycle permit
In Minnesota, you need to have a valid driver's license to get a motorcycle instruction permit. This permit lets you practice riding your motorcycle on public roads so you can get used to it and learn how to control it.
Anyone who rides a motorcycle on public roads in Minnesota must have a valid driver's license that includes a motorcycle permit or endorsement. You need to have these documents with you whenever you are riding on public roads.
How do I get a permit?
To get a motorcycle instruction permit, you need to first pass a written test at a driver examination station. Be sure to study the Minnesota Motorcycle Manual before your test. If you're under 18 years old, you must also show a certificate from an approved motorcycle driver’s safety course.
The written test can be taken only once per day. When you pass the test and pay the permit fee, you will receive an instruction permit that allows you to practice riding your motorcycle on public roads.
Note: If you are in the Ignition Interlock Device program (IIDP), you cannot drive a motorcycle or have a motorcycle permit.
Are there restrictions with my permit?
When you're riding a motorcycle with an instruction permit, you need to follow these rules:
- You must wear eye protection and a DOT-approved helmet.
- You are not allowed to have passengers.
- You cannot ride at night. "Night" or “nighttime” means the time from half an hour after the sun sets to half an hour before it rises.
How long is my permit valid?
Your permit is valid for one year and can be renewed. If your instruction permit expires, you must retake the written test and pay the fee for a new permit.
Do I need to register my motorcycle?
In Minnesota, all motorcycles need to be registered.
Registration is valid from March 1 to the end of February the next year, and you need to renew it every year. If you just moved to Minnesota, you have 60 days to register your motorcycle. To find out more, talk to your local deputy registrar or call 651-297-2126.
Your motorcycle must have a license plate that shows the registration tax has been paid. You can find more information on the Registration Tax webpage.
You can find more information on license plates on the Motorcycle License Plates webpage.
