Current system
In 2009, the Department of Public Safety and Metropolitan Emergency Services Board hired a contractor to build a statewide transitional plan to an internet-based 911 solution called next generation 911. By 2014, all dispatch centers in Minnesota had access to the system, which is maintained, managed, and monitored by a single 911 service provider.
History
Minnesota's first citywide 911 systems were installed by Windom and St. James cities during 1968 and Jackson County installed the first countywide 911 system in 1973. Since then technical developments in the late 1970s and early 1980s resulted in a refinement called Enhanced 911 provides the selective routing of calls and automatic display of the 911 caller's telephone number and location.
