NextGen 911 system

What is Next Generation 911 Services?

NextGen 911 (commonly referred to as NG911) is a digital, internet protocol (IP)-based system that will replace the analog 911 infrastructure that’s been in place for decades.

The success and reliability of 911 will be greatly improved with the implementation of NextGen 911, as it will enhance emergency number services to create a faster, more resilient system that allows voice, photos, videos and text messages to flow seamlessly from the public to the 911 network. NextGen 911 will also improve public safety answering points’ (PSAPs) ability to help manage call overload, natural disasters and transfer of 911 calls based on caller location data.

Because most 911 systems were originally built using analog rather than digital technologies, PSAPs across the state need to be upgraded to NextGen 911. While the technology to implement these new IP-based 911 systems is available, the transition to NextGen 911 involves much more than just new computer hardware and software. Implementing NG911 in states and counties nationwide will require the coordination of a variety of emergency communication, public safety, legislative and governing entities.

Cybersecurity Policy Templates

Empowering Our PSAP Partners: New Cybersecurity Policy Templates Now Available

Public safety professionals are on the front lines every day, and in today’s digital environment, that also means safeguarding the systems that support emergency response. To help strengthen this critical layer of protection, we are releasing a new set of cybersecurity model templates developed specifically for Minnesota’s PSAP community.

Created in collaboration with GTEL Advisors, LLC and aligned with both NIST and CJIS standards, these templates are designed to reduce policy development overhead while helping agencies improve resilience and meet evolving security expectations.

The four model templates include:

Each document is customizable and intended to meet agencies where they are—whether building new protocols or refining existing ones. We aim to provide practical, ready-to-implement resources that make cybersecurity more accessible and manageable for all PSAPs across the state.

We deeply value the role PSAPs play in keeping Minnesota communities safe. These tools are part of a broader effort to support your work and build a more secure, consistent foundation statewide.

If you would like support tailoring or implementing these templates, please contact ECN’s team. We are here to help.

Thank you for your continued partnership.
