Helicopters
The helicopters are equipped with a daytime camera and an infrared camera. They also have a spotlight and can transmit live video to a receiver, which can then be streamed securely online. The pilots are equipped with night vision goggles and trained in different methods of loading operations used in search and rescue, such as short-haul, rappel and close-quarter loading. These search and rescue missions are performed in conjunction with the Minnesota Air Rescue Team (MART). Tactical operations using the same skill sets are performed by the State Patrol Special Response Team.
The Bell 407 has a Rolls-Royce turbine engine capable of providing 813 shaft horse power, though it is limited to 674 shaft horsepower for takeoff and 630 shaft horsepower for continuous operation. At 100 percent power, the compressor runs at 51,000 rpm, the main rotor blades at 413 rpm and the tail rotor at 2500 rpm. It has a fuel capacity of 146 gallons and burns roughly 48 gallons per hour of Jet A fuel.
Airplanes
The airplanes are used for traffic enforcement and the transport of law enforcement personnel and equipment. The Cirrus SR22 includes a daytime camera, an infrared camera and is also capable of transmitting live video. The Cirrus SR22 is used for traffic enforcement, pursuit mitigation, search and find missions and watching over critical-event situations.

Pilot Training and Certifications
State Patrol pilots are required to have commercial FAA licensure for the aircraft that they fly as well as maintain a second-class airman's medical certification. Helicopter pilots become vertical reference certified and airplane pilots are instrument rated. In addition to the aviation training, each State Patrol pilot is a fully licensed and trained State Patrol trooper.
