District Staffing

​​​​​​​​​​​​​​The Minnesota State Patrol has 810 civilian and sworn staff who work diligently to carry out the agency's mission. The State Patrol is divided geographically into 11 patrol districts across the state. Each patrol district is further subdivided into patrol stations. There are also six separate specialty districts: Aviation, Capitol Security, Commercial Vehicle Enforcement, Communications, Investigative Services, and Training and Development. Each patrol district has a leadership team consisting of one captain and multiple lieutenants. To support district operations, all offices are also staffed with various office administrative staff who play a vital role in State Patrol operations. 

Rank and Position Duties

  • Captain: In charge of and responsible for all things related to patrol district operations.
  • Lieutenant: Supervises troopers.
  • District Investigator: Manages arrests, evidence in-take and investigative case files.
  • Station Sergeant: Manages the scheduling of troopers for the station assigned.
  • State Patrol Trooper: Ensures the safe movement of vehicles on Minnesota's roadways.
  • Office administrative staff: Handle all office related tasks, including contracted services for the public, transcription, vehicle forfeiture, records, and purchasing.​

Specialty Sections

The State Patrol has four specialty sections that provide essential functions for the agency: Investigative Services Section, Commercial Vehicle Enforcement, Capitol Security and Executive Protection, and the Training and Development Section.
