The Minnesota State Patrol is divided into 11 geographic patrol districts across the state. Each district has its own patrol stations.

Specialty districts

There are also six separate specialty districts:

  • Aviation
  • Capitol Security
  • Commercial Vehicle Enforcement
  • Communications
  • Investigative Services
  • Training and Development

Each district has a leadership team with one captain and several lieutenants. Additionally, each office has administrative staff who are crucial to keeping everything running smoothly.

Ranks and position duties

Our State Patrol staff have titles that reflect their specific roles and responsibilities.  

  • Colonel: The colonel is responsible for strategic priorities, policies, goals and representing the agency in all forums.
  • Lieutenant Colonel: Oversees the four majors and other groups, such as labor relations, the budget, honor guard, and other areas of the agency.
  • Major: There are four majors within the State Patrol. Their duties include providing supervision and support to district captains, as well as overseeing projects.
  • Captain: In charge of and responsible for all things related to patrol district operations.
  • Lieutenant: Supervises troopers.
  • District investigator: Manages arrests, evidence in-take and investigative case files.
  • Station sergeant: Manages the scheduling of troopers for the station assigned.
  • State Patrol trooper: Ensures the safe movement of vehicles on Minnesota's roadways.
  • Office administrative staff: Handle all office related tasks, including contracted services for the public, transcription, vehicle forfeiture, records, and purchasing.​

​Specialty sections

The State Patrol has four specialty sections that provide essential functions for the agency: Investigative Services Section, Commercial Vehicle Enforcement, Capitol Security and Executive Protection, and the Training and Development Section.
