Commercial vehicles: Mandatory Inspection Program updates
Current updates
Below is a summary of revisions to the Mandatory Inspection Program (MIP) manual that have been incorporated into the 2025 Student Handbook.
- p. ii – Information change email added
- To change or update information email the completed form to: MIPinfochange@state.mn.us
- p. 10 – MN IRP temp registration information added; fire truck and emergency response vehicle note removed.
- *Driver and Vehicle Services may also issue temporary apportioned registration with no 21 day temp. In those instances “MN IRP TEMP” should be written in the license plate field (box 11) of the inspection report and the full VIN must be entered (box 8). In the notes section on page 2 write TEMP APPORTIONED CAB CARD – NO 21 DAY TEMP.
- p. 15 – note on timeline for change of information clarified
- Changed verbiage from “immediately” to “within 30 days”
- p. 26 – Clarification of ABS marking requirements; List all ABS exemptions per CVSA bulletin
- 7.ABS malfunction indicator lamp on trailer must have "ABS" marking on or near the lamp.
- p. 28 – Section for missing brakes and mismatch brakes moved from page 34 to page 28.
- p. 71 – updated field of view to match federal definition
This section doesn't apply to vehicle safety technologies (video event recorders, transponders, etc.) that are:- Not more than 8.5 inches below the upper edge of the area swept by windshield wipers.
- Not more than 7 inches above the lower edge of the area swept by the windshield wipers
- Outside the driver's sight lines to the road, highway signs and signals.
- p. 82 – Bus and motorcoach information from page 72 and page 81 combined onto page 82
- p. 84 – Change of information timeline updated to 30 days.
