Capitol security dashboard
Capitol Security and Executive Protection are responsible for keeping the Minnesota State Capitol complex safe. This includes protecting government officials, state employees and visitors. They handle emergencies and events at the Capitol. The team is led by a State Patrol captain and two lieutenants.
Executive Protection Unit
The Executive Protection Unit ensures the safety of the governor, lieutenant governor and their staff. They also handle security at the Governor's Residence on Summit Avenue in St. Paul and at any other primary residence the governor may have.
Capitol Security Division
The current staff is made up of the captain, lieutenants, troopers, security officers, security and communication systems monitors, and security sergeants. They are responsible for the security of all buildings, parking facilities, memorials, parks and open malls on the Capitol grounds. In addition, they provide security for more than 15,000 employees, and thousands of guests and customers who visit the complex daily.
Operations Center
The Capitol Security Operations Center is the central hub for the operation of the state buildings and all emergencies that occur within its jurisdiction. There are more than 100,000 environmental and security points regulated by the Operations Center staff. The Operations Center monitors more than 900 cameras and 300 intercoms located throughout the Capitol complex in high-security and public areas.
Event security
Each year, over 700 events are held at the State Capitol complex. These events are organized through permits issued by the Department of Administration. Capitol Security is in charge of ensuring safety, security and law enforcement for these events, which can range from a single person to thousands of attendees.
