Speed laws and aggressive driving
Obey the sign and stay safe
We’ve all been there while driving. You’re running late to an activity, or stressed about a work project, or annoyed at the seemingly clueless driver ahead of you. Take a breath and don’t take out life’s frustrations on the road through speeding and aggressive driving. If others are speeding, stay safe and avoid the temptation to join them. Speed is a major contributing factor to fatal and life-changing crashes. Obey the speed limit, drive to road conditions and stay safe on the road.
Avoid a costly speeding ticket by obeying the speed limit
- A speeding ticket may affect your bank account, driving record or insurance rates.
- Speeding ticket fines vary by county, but it will typically cost $100 or more plus court fees for driving 10 mph over the limit.
- Fines double if you’re speeding 20 mph over the limit.
- You can lose your license for six months for driving 100 mph or more.
- A crash involving speed could result in criminal or civil penalties.
Reduce your speed. Reduce your chance of a crash.
Obeying the speed limit and driving to road conditions:
- Gives you more vehicle control.
- Allows you to respond more quickly to changing conditions, such as bad weather, cars slowing down ahead of you, road construction, or an area that isn’t well lit at night.
- Decreases the severity of the impact during a crash.
Give yourself room to react
- Drivers should keep a three-second following distance to allow for safe stopping and reaction to other vehicles.
- It takes more than the length of a football field to stop when traveling at 60 miles per hour.
Stay safe if you encounter an aggressive driver
- Get out of their way.
- Stay calm – safely reaching your destination is your goal.
- Do not challenge them.
- Avoid eye contact.
- Ignore their gestures and don't return them.
- Report aggressive driving by providing vehicle description, license plate number and location.
