Correctional facility emergency evacuation drills

Emergency evacuation drills should happen at the intervals specified in Minnesota statute or more often when necessary to familiarize all occupants with the drill procedure. 

Leadership

People in leadership roles at the facility should be responsible for planning and conducting drills. 

Time 

Drills should happen at unexpected times and under varying conditions to simulate the unusual conditions that occur in case of fire.  

Record keeping

Include the following information about the drill in your official records: 

  • Identity of the person conducting the drill 
  • Date and time of the drill 
  • Notification method used 
  • Staff members on duty and participating
  • Number of occupants evacuated 
  • Special conditions simulated 
  • Problems encountered 
  • Weather conditions when occupants were evacuated
  • Time required to accomplish complete evacuation 

Other facility requirements identified in Minnesota State Fire Code

  • Provide an annual fire alarm inspection test result.
  • Provide an annual sprinkler system test.
  • Provide an annual fire extinguisher inspection.
  • Provide a semi-annual kitchen hood inspection.
  • Provide an annual kitchen hood cleaning.
  • Conduct weekly generator inspections and monthly 30-minute run test under load.
