Suspect Arrested in Shooting Death of 9-Year-Old Girl

February 23, 2022

ST. PAUL – Agents with the Minnesota Bureau of Criminal Apprehension (BCA) earlier today arrested a suspect in the May 2021 shooting death of 9-year-old Trinity Ottoson-Smith of Minneapolis.

D’Pree Shareef Robinson, 19, was arrested today in Minneapolis and has been booked into the Hennepin County Jail on probable cause 2nd degree murder.

Trinity Ottoson-Smith was jumping on a trampoline in the backyard of a friend’s home on the 2200 block of N. Ilion Avenue in Minneapolis on May 15, 2021, when she was shot and injured. She died 12 days later at North Memorial Health Hospital in Robbinsdale.

BCA agents developed information about the shooting that led to Robinson’s arrest. Investigators believe Ottoson-Smith was an unintended target of a gang-related drive-by shooting. BCA agents took Robinson into custody at approximately noon today at his Minneapolis home without incident.

“As we said during the Spotlight on Crime news conference last August, families deserve to know who did this to their children.” BCA Superintendent Drew Evans said. “We have worked diligently to achieve justice for Trinity and her family. This is the first step toward achieving that justice.”

This remains and active and ongoing investigation. Robinson will make his first appearance in Hennepin County District Court later this week.
